The Beautiful Galatea: comic opera by Franz von Suppè
21st April @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm£15
The Imperial Vienna Orchestra is pleased to present to you a fully-staged production of The Beautiful Galatea, with music by Franz von Suppé.
Sung in English, the operetta is performed in one act and tells the famed tale of the beautiful statue that comes to life – with a twist. See the comic opera as you’ve never seen it before, set in an artist’s studio in the 1940s.
The set features artworks made by the prestigious Guild of St Stephen & St George, based in Norwich, and there will also be an opportunity to meet some of the stonemasons and see their work in a completely new context.
Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Wymondham Helicopter Group, to support the work of the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Supported by Norfolk County Council.
In the early 1860s, French operettas by Jacques Offenbach were first presented in Vienna. Franz von Suppé was obliged to compete with them by taking the time-honored traditions of Vienna and combining it with the new style of Offenbach. Die schöne Galathée was Franz von Suppé’s first critical success.
The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue, named Galatea. Mydas, a patron of the arts, wishes to buy the statue, however Pygmalion is not willing to sell it. Pygmalion prays to Venus, the goddess of love, that the statue be brought to life; the wish is granted, but Galatea turns out to be more stubborn than Pygmalion thought. She is far more interested in Ganymed, Pygmalion’s assistant from Greece, however at the same time, she accepts the advances of Mydas as he offers her jewellery and riches. When Pygmalion catches Galatea and Ganymed together, he is furious and successfully implores Venus to turn Galatea back into stone. Mydas finally gets his wish when Pygmalion sells the statue in a fit of rage.
